TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Assembly (Tasmania)

The petition of the undersigned residents draws to the attention of the House:

  • The current Burnie Court site is not fit for purpose;
  • The Government's proposed site at Mooreville Road Burnie (old UTAS campus) is not an acceptable location for a courthouse;
  • There has been no consultation with local residents about the relocation of the Court to their neighbourhood;
  • There are significant concerns raised by the business community;
  • There are significant concerns raised by the Law Society;
  • There are significant concerns raised by local residents; and
  • The relocation budget has now blown out to $40 million.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to call on the Government to:

  1. Immediately halt plans to relocate the Burnie CBD Courthouse to Mooreville Road; and
  2. Commit to redeveloping the Court on the current site or find a new location for the Burnie Courthouse within the Burnie CBD.
