TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Assembly (Tasmania)
The petition of the undersigned citizens concerned for Hobart and its environs, draws to the attention of the House that: (a) low grade bunker fuel with harmful sulfur and particulate emissions, is being used in the Port of Hobart by some cruise ships whilst docked; and (b) these emissions are polluting the atmosphere, which in turn has both a chronic impact on human health, and tarnishes Hobart's clean, green image. Your Petitioners therefore ask the House to: (a) resolve to call upon the Federal Minister for Transport to use Commonwealth powers to immediately ban the use of bunker fuels by cruise ships whilst they are docked in the Port of Hobart, limiting the sulfur emissions to less than 0.08% sulfur emissions, in line with restrictions in Sydney Harbour; and (b) such resolution be communicated to the Federal Minister for Transport.
