We the undersigned are concerned about a proposal for a major privately owned landfill to be located in the natural Old Growth forest gully in the Mangalore Tiers at Mangalore in Tasmania. The proposed landfill is bad practice according to the authoritative Victorian Environmental Protection Agency's document entitled "Best Practice Environmental Management Siting, design operation and rehabilitation of landfills" in as much as it is to be located in a gully, which is a natural rainage line. Further, the proposed site is located in a gully described by the National Parks and Wildlife Division as Old Growth Blue Gum Forest, a vulnerable species recognised under the Tasmanian Regional Forests Agreement. The proposed site is situated on sandstone and heavily fractured dolerite, contrary to best practice for land filling. The landfill is directly upstream of fourteen domestic and agricultural bores and some agricultural bores located in the Brighton/Jordan River catchment area. Contamination of this existing groundwater resource would be a major blow for the Mangalore/Brighton agricultural area. The proponents have not considered any other sites and all their investigative work was performed after their original application was submitted, which is against best practice for planning and development. We the undersigned hereby pray that the Government will show cause why they have entertained the proposal, take notice of these glaringly negative aspects of this proposal and take steps to reject this proposal outright.
