TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Assembly (Tasmania)
Electors of Bass draw to the attention of the House daily instances of crime and anti-social behaviour in Rocherlea, including:
• The recent arson attack which destroyed the local store, resulting in devastating emotional and financial distress for the owners and the loss of a valuable community service;
• Daily 'hooning' behaviour by children and adults, using unregistered trail bikes ( also unlicensed) on public roads, as well as walkways and reserves;
• Daily 'hooning' behaviour by drivers on local roads at high speed, creating noise, discomfort, danger and a relentless feeling of fear for local residents;
• School-age children roaming unsupervised around Rocherlea, inflicting terrible acts of aggression and violence on property and people (including the stoning of some of our elderly citizens), before, after and during school hours ;
• Vandalism of property, especially against Housing Tasmania properties by a minority of people who are ungrateful for the privilege of living in housing paid for by the taxpayer.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to:
• Provide the money desperately needed to employ more police, so that reports of violence and anti-social behaviour can be responded to more quickly;
• Support the immediate installation of cameras to allow the bulk of the crime to be recorded and the criminals eventually apprehended;
• Install speed humps in known hooning area (one main street!);
• Show more care for the taxpayers' investment in Housing Tasmania;
• Sell off a larger share of the housing in Rocherlea to the private market which would boost pride in the community while allowing the Government to build replacement houses in other suburbs.
