Battery Point Foreshore Walkway

The Petition of the undersigned citizens of Tasmania draws to the attention of the House:

There are many benefits for Tasmanians to provide access by means of a walkway along the Battery Point foreshore between Castray Esplanade and Marieville Esplanade. Benefits include:

1. Safe at-grade access for people with disability, those who are ageing or with caring responsibilities;
2. A link from the UTAS Sandy Bay campus and Sandy Bay into the city;
3. Part of the Greater Hobart Bicycle Network;
4. A public asset to improve health and wellbeing of the community, visitors and tourists alike;
5. As a commuting option to potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and
6. Nine out of ten people in Hobart support a waterfront walkway linking Hobart and Sandy Bay.

Pathways along riverbanks and shorelines benefit communities as successful public assets around the world and in other parts of Tasmania. 

Access to the foreshore has been complicated by crown licences.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the State Government to:

1. Put the public interest first by supporting the public's right to enjoy access to the Battery Point foreshore with a waterfront walkway linking Hobart and Sandy Bay; 
2. Enable this project to ensure protected access for bike riders, pedestrians and all abilities users;
3. Review crown licence arrangements that may currently hinder such a proposal; and
4. Work with Hobart Council to realise a suitable design and project.
