TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Assembly (Tasmania)

Your petitioners draw the attention of the House to an increase in violent crimes and robberies in the Northern Suburbs of Hobart. Numerous businesses, employees and customers have reported brutal attacks, senseless damage to property, intimidation of staff and customers and racial abuse. The offenders are often armed with weapons. These acts of theft and assault have become increasingly brazen. Bus commuters and taxi drivers have also been subjected to horrific assaults.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the Government to:

  • Install adequate CCTV cameras in the central business districts of Moonah, Glenorchy and Claremont (linked to Tasmania Police for monitoring purposes)
  • Erect a police booth in the Glenorchy bus mall (to be staffed by Tasmania Police during peak commuter periods)
  • Amend the Sentencing Act, Criminal Code and the Police Offences Act; recognising hate crime, in instances of targeted attacks on migrants and members of the LGBTQI community and others, as motivation for these attacks.
