TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Assembly (Tasmania)

The petition of the undersigned residents of Tasmania draws to the attention of the House the recent attacks upon multicultural Tasmanians. In particular, we draw attention to the circumstances facing Mr Devarshi Deka who was left paralysed by a senseless attack last year while studying in Tasmania and celebrating securing a job. Dev came to study in Tasmania and have a new life, but his medical condition means he can no longer apply for any other type of permanent visa as he can no longer pass the required medical examination. Dev's parents cannot financially support him having to rely solely on Dev's brother, a teacher, to support them. This is placing incredible financial strain on the family. This means ministerial intervention remains Dev's only option for staying in Australia.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to urge the Premier and the State of Tasmania to make a strong representation to the Federal Minister for Immigration to grant Mr Devarshi Deka permanent residency, in order that he may continue to reside in Tasmania and receive the support and care he needs.
