Basketball Court Shortages in Launceston

Eligibility - Tasmania residents

Principal Petitioner:

Craig Gibson, President Launceston Basketball Association
Elphin Sports Centre
14-16 Dowling Street
Launceston 7250

Sponsor: Ms Janie Finlay

Posting Date: 17/3/2023

Closing Date: 12/6/2023

Tabled Date: 22/6/2023

Responded Minister: Minister for Sport and Recreation on 17/9/2023

619 Signatures
TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Assembly (Tasmania)

The petition of the undersigned residents of Tasmania draws to the attention of the House that:

  • The Launceston Basketball Association represents more than 3000 players from 396 teams and has experienced a 30 per cent increase in membership from 2021 to 2022.
  • For years it has been known there are a shortage of basketball courts in Launceston. Many basketball courts in Launceston are not compliant with poor lighting, insufficient run-offs and substandard scoreboards and shot clocks.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on all levels of government:

  • to confirm their commitment, including funding and timelines, for an additional six courts in Launceston; and
  • to invest in significant upgrades to increase court capacity at Elphin Sports Centre.
